Word of the Week: Elated
Definition: to be filled with joy and happiness
Sentence: Mrs. Hudson was elated that all of her students completed their paintings.

Mrs. Byrd will be introducing our word of the week on the news show each Monday. Teachers will post the word in their classrooms and incorporate it in instruction during the week. We encourage parents to talk about the word of the week at home too.

4 Year Kindergarten Pre-Registration
4 Year Kindergarten Pre-Registration for 2013-14 begins January 30-February 1, 2013. Parents may pre-register at any district elementary school or child development center.  Children do not have to live in the school attendance area to pre-register at that location.  Pre-registration does not guarantee enrollment in a GCS 4K program.  Children selected for 4K programs must demonstrate academic/developmental needs and/or risk factors such as low family income and low parent education level.  Screened children will be ranked district-wide and those most at-risk for school success will receive initial assignments.  Parents must present their child’s birth certificate, immunization certificate or religious exemption statement, and two proofs of residence, such as a current utility bill and a copy of a lease.  4K pre-registration ends March 1, 2013; forms will not be accepted after this date.  PLEASE NOTE: 4K Screening is March 20-22, 2013.

K5 & 1st Pre-Registration
Registration for K5 and new 1st graders for 2013-2014 has begun. Please be sure to register now so we can have an accurate projection for next year. The district has posted the school calendar for 2013-2014 on their website. You may go to www.greenville.k12.sc.us to access their calendar. The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 21st.

Pet Supply Drive
The Bethel Student Council is collecting needed items for the Greenville Humane Society. Please consider donating any of the following items during the week of January 28th-February 1st: Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (blue), hand sanitizer, paper towels, newspapers, treats, and pet toys. All donations should be dropped off at the Intermediate Multiage classroom.

Father Daughter Dance
PTA will sponsor the 3rd Annual Father Daughter Dance. It will be held on Friday, February 1st from 6:30-8:30 pm in the cafeteria. Attire is dressy casual. This is a great opportunity for girls to spend some quality time with their fathers. Tickets are $5.00 per person if pre-ordered and $7.00 the night of the dance. Couples will enjoy dancing and an assortment of desserts. Katherine Escobar Photography will be available to take pictures of each couple, and there will be a $10.00 minimum for pictures, payable the night of the dance. You won’t want to miss this special event!

TD Bank Reedy River Run
Bethel Elementary runs the ‘Reedy’ on March 1st-2nd! Get healthy and help Bethel win $1,000 by listing Bethel when you register online for one of the three TD Bank Reedy River Run events (Reedy Great Youth Mile, 5K, and 10K). Or register through Bethel for $12.  Registration forms and fees must be turned in by Wednesday, February 20th.  Please include student’s homeroom teacher’s name on the registration form.  Invite friends and family to register through Bethel. For more information, go to www.reedyriverrun.com or e-mail Mrs. Kleinfelter at bkleinfelter@greenville.k12.sc.us.

Valentine's Day Parties
We will have Valentine’s Day parties on February 14th – K5 & Mrs. Irick’s class (10:30-11:15) and 1st – 5th grades (1:15-2:00). Please remember to provide a balance of sweets and healthy foods for the party! Parents who assist with the parties will be asked to leave at 2:00 for security reasons allowing us to prepare for a safe afternoon dismissal. Parents will no longer be allowed to sign children out from the classroom during events such as parties and the school picnic. Students with early dismissals must go through the front office. Thank you for helping us with school safety!

Science Fair
Science Fair projects are due in your child's classroom on February 22nd. Projects must include an experiment, NOT a demonstration. It must include a question that you do an experiment to answer. Students should choose a topic in which they are interested. Remember to keep your science simple – it is more important to follow (and write up) the steps of the scientific method than to have a complicated project. We will recognize our school's Science Fair winners at our PTA Science Fair Night, Monday, March 11th. Please contact your child's teacher for more information, or visit the Bethel website.

BOX TOPS
Continue clipping those Box Tops and sending them in to school!! Our next contest will end on Jan. 31st. The top classes from K-2nd and 3rd-5th will win a game with the administrative team in the gym. It will be lots of fun, so keep on clipping to help your child's class win. Congratulations to Mrs. Hendrix’s first grade class for winning last month’s contest with 222 Box Tops! ***Tip: Make a container labeled "Box Tops" and give to grandparents, aunts, uncles or even take to work so that others can help you collect.

BETHEL BASH

Pictures
We want your pictures! Please send any pictures you are willing to share that you have taken of school functions, class parties, field trips, staff/teacher luncheons, etc. to Joni Puckett, school historian, at jonipuckett@charter.net.
